Our Pastor

Shaw2Rev. Dr. C. Dennis Shaw, Senior Pastor

Pastor Dennis came to Hilltop in July 2012 from Stratmoor Hills United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs, CO. Dennis has been in ministry within the Rocky Mountain Conference of the UMC since 2000 in a variety of appointments. He serves as an officer of the Conference as the Conference Statistician and was the Vice President of the Conference Council on Finance and Administration. He has been a Senior Pastor since 2003. While in Colorado Springs, he served as the local board president for two faith based non-profits, Westside CARES and Family Promise (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network.)

Pastor Dennis's sermons are solidly grounded in the Bible. He believes that God loves us and wants a deep relationship with us.He believes that God has showered us with grace and forgiveness, and that through the Scripture we find healing and hope. The ancient words have as much relevance for us today as they have had through the centuries. Now our response is to accept God's love and to emulate Christ with those around us, inside and outside the church walls. Pastor Dennis's preaching style is extemporaneous and energetic.

Education is a core value. He has an eclectic education focused on excellence with two degrees from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC:  a Doctor of Ministry, awarded in May, 2012, and a Master of Divinity in May 1999 (Summa Cum Laude).  He also holds a Master in Business Administration (1979) from Rochester (N.Y). Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Music (1971) from Georgia State University in his hometown of Atlanta.

In 1994 Dennis retired as a Regular Army Lieutenant Colonel. Military responsibilities included light infantry, human resource management, and cost analysis.  His assignments took him to Alaska, Colorado, New York, Virginia, Kansas, Korea and Germany with brief excursions to other European countries and Japan.

Pastor Dennis and Marilyn White have been married for over 30 years and are parents to a blended family with four adult children living in Virginia, Colorado and Texas. Praise God!

Between 1982 and 1989, Dennis ran seven marathons and qualified for and competed in the Boston Marathon in 1988. He has skied in North and South America, Asia, and Europe, and loves the Utah snow. He has golf clubs and spends time on a golf course, but to call it golf is a stretch. His goal before he dies is to visit every Major League baseball stadium. To say he's a baseball fan is an understatement. There is theological meaning in a game with an objective to get home safe. He also maintains a blog on seeking wisdom and understanding.

Pastor Dennis is usually in his office Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. However, if you would like to meet with him, it is best to schedule an appointment with Leigh Anne in the office (office@hilltopumchurch.org).
